The Cave of Antiparos

Even before you reach the entrance, the landscape has already begun to prepare you. The hill of Ai-Giannis rises above the blue of the Aegean, dry and austere, as if guarding a secret for millions of years. And when you finally begin the descent, daylight recedes, the air smells of damp stone, and all you can hear is the sound of your own footsteps on the stairs. Welcome to the Cave of Antiparos, one of the most impressive natural monuments of the Cyclades.

A descent into the depths of time

Entry to the cave is via a long staircase, literally carved into the rock, which leads you step by step into the interior of the hill. As you descend, the temperature drops noticeably, the humidity becomes more pronounced on the skin, and the light changes colour, from the blinding white of the Cyclades to a soft, golden glow that brings out the formations.

Around you, stalactites and stalagmites rise in shapes reminiscent of statues, columns, even trees made of stone. These are some of the oldest known formations in Europe, the creation of a process measured in millions of years, drop by drop.

The legend of the Holy Tree

At the far end of the cave stands the most impressive formation: a huge stalagmite that tradition has named the “Holy Tree,” as its shape resembles a tree trunk or, to others, an altar. The sight of it, in the half-light, evokes a sense of awe that few monuments in the Cyclades can offer.

It is no accident that the cave has been a place of worship and reverence since antiquity. Its formations, discreetly illuminated, turn a visit into something between a geological tour and a spiritual experience.

Signatures that endured through time

In various spots on the walls, carved names and dates can be discerned, imprints left by travellers, explorers, and notable figures who descended here centuries ago, leaving their mark on a stone that does not forget. The cave’s most famous historical moment took place on Christmas Day 1673, when the French ambassador to Constantinople organised a solemn mass inside the cave with hundreds in attendance, lights, and fireworks, an event that has remained etched in the site’s history.

These carvings are not mere graffiti; they are traces of a long relationship between humanity and a natural wonder, a reminder that the cave captivated visitors long before it became a tourist destination.

Beyond the golden beaches

Antiparos is known for its deep-blue shores and its relaxed, cosmopolitan atmosphere, yet the cave of Ai-Giannis proves that the island conceals an entirely different dimension as well: dark, cool, geological, deeply primordial. A visit here acts as a counterpoint to the sunshine and salt, a moment of silence and reflection between two swims.

Those who climb back to the surface, their eyes slowly adjusting to the light, often describe the same sensation: that they have just emerged from a journey far longer than the few metres of depth they actually covered.

The Cave of Antiparos is not simply a sight to “tick off” your list. It is an invitation to feel just how small a human being is before time, and how magnificent nature can become, when given enough of it.
