Kástro of Ioulida

There are castles you look at from afar. And then there is the Kástro of Ioulida, which you walk inside — because here, in the capital of Kea, the residents did not build their village next to the fortification. They built it on top of it, within it, fused with it. Climbing the cobbled lanes of Ioulida, you can no longer tell where the neighbour’s house ends and where the medieval wall begins. And that confusion is the place’s rarest gift.

A neighbourhood built into the walls

The Kástro of Ioulida is not a fenced-off ruin, nor a ticketed museum attraction. It is a living neighbourhood. The stone archways, narrow passages and vaulted walkways that once linked the towers of the fortification today connect the courtyards, doorways and steps of houses that are still inhabited. Walking through it, you feel that time was never split into “then” and “now” — it simply carried on, layer upon layer.

From ancient Ioulis to the Venetian fortress

The hill’s history begins long before the Venetians. Here stood the acropolis of ancient Ioulis, one of the four city-states of ancient Kea, with roots reaching back to the Bronze Age. When, in the 13th century, the Venetian nobleman Domenico Michieli built the castle to shield the site from pirate raids, he made generous use of the ancient city’s own material: hewn stones, fragments of columns, traces of temples, now embedded in the new walls. The result is a monument of two eras in a single wall — classical Greece literally supporting the medieval Cycladic defences.

The view that justifies every step

The climb is worth it even before you reach the top. Along the bends of the path, the church of Agios Georgios o Palaiokastritis appears and disappears among the rooftops, while the sound of your footsteps on stone becomes the only noise around you. At the highest point, the view opens out towards the harbour of Korissia and the vast blue of the Aegean, with Attica faintly outlined on the horizon — a reminder of how close, and at the same time how far away, you are.

Silence, light and a sense of the authentic

You will find no queues here, nor souvenir stalls. You will find the scent of stone warmed by the sun, the shadow cast by an archway over the lane, perhaps a cat curled up in a niche of the wall. Ioulida does not put itself on display; it reveals itself slowly, to whoever has the patience to walk it unhurried.
