The Castle of Chora

There are places you don’t visit — you climb them. The Castle of Chora, on Anafi, is one of these. A rock rising above the whitewashed houses, where the wind grows stronger, the light purer, and the silence deeper. You climb step by step, and as you near the summit, the island spreads out beneath you like a map painted in lime and stone.

A rock with history

The Castle was not built there by chance. In the years of piracy, when the Aegean was open sea full of dangers, the people of Anafi chose this precipitous rock as the island’s safest point. There, under the rule of the Venetian Dukes of the Aegean, a fortified settlement known as Kastelli was built — houses pressed tightly against one another, their outer walls forming a single defensive wall.

For centuries, this was Anafi: an entire village gathered on the back of a rock, watching the sea with wariness. Only when the dangers receded did the inhabitants gradually begin to move lower, building the Chora of today. Kastelli was left behind, a silent witness to an age of uncertainty.

The climb

The alleys of Chora lead you upward without hurry. You pass between whitewashed walls, courtyards with basil, doors painted sky-blue. The slope grows steeper, the houses thin out, and then you find yourself before the bare ruins: stones still holding their shape, foundations that remember walls, an emptiness that was once a roof.

It doesn’t take much imagination to feel what life was like up here. The wind passes between the stones the same way it did centuries ago. The landscape hasn’t changed — only the people have gone.

The view you won’t forget

From the summit, the gaze meets no obstacles. The Cretan Sea stretches to the south, deep and boundless, while around you the other islands of the Cyclades appear as shadows on the horizon. Closer by, the imposing Kalamos stands like a guardian of the island, one of the tallest monolithic rocks in the Mediterranean.

This view is not merely beautiful; it is absolute. There is nothing between you and the sea, nothing between you and the sky. Only the rock, the air, and the sense of standing at the edge of some world.

The sunset

As dusk approaches, the light changes color slowly, almost hesitantly. The stones of Kastelli take on a warm, golden hue, while the sky behind Kalamos shifts from orange to deep purple. Visitors sit there in silence, without much talk — because some moments need no commentary, only attention.

It is perhaps the most atmospheric sunset in the Cyclades, not because it is the most spectacular in color, but because it comes with absolute calm. No noise, no hurry. Only you, the light, and the history beneath your feet.
