Catacombs of Milos

You descend a staircase carved into the rock, and the Milos sunlight fades behind you as if a door had closed. The air turns cool, almost damp, and the light dims to a soft, amber glow. All around you, the porous volcanic stone still bears the marks of the tools that carved it some sixteen centuries ago. You are standing in the Catacombs of Milos, one of the rarest and most moving monuments of the early Christian era in the entire Mediterranean.

The first great cemetery of a new faith

In the late Roman period, as Christianity was taking its first steps in the Aegean, the small Christian community of Milos sought a burial place that would reflect its new spirituality. Thus the Catacombs were born, the island’s first great communal cemetery of that era. It was not merely a place of death; it was a place of gathering, prayer and remembrance, where the living came to honour those who had passed, believing in a life beyond the grave.

Carved into the heart of the volcano

The geology of Milos, the same geology that gave the island its more than 75 colourful beaches, is what made this underground world possible. The soft, volcanic rock was ideal for carving, and the early Christians made the most of it, creating three large, independent underground galleries — known as A, B and C — each with its own width and course, originally linked by smaller, secondary passages. Today the three main galleries communicate with one another through more recent openings made in the 20th century, forming a single, labyrinthine complex that inspires awe as you make your way through it.

Chambers of silence, chambers of memory

As you move through the galleries, time seems to stand still. Hundreds of tombs open into the walls, most in the form of arched recesses — known as arcosolia — where the bodies of the dead were laid. The complex is completed by a rectangular burial chamber, designed after the model of the cubicula of the Catacombs of Rome, a detail that reveals just how closely the small community of Milos was connected to the great centres of early Christianity. The silence here is not empty; it is dense, full of the presence of the thousands of people who passed through before you.

A monument rare in the world

The Catacombs of Milos are not merely a local attraction; they rank among the very few surviving monuments of their kind anywhere in the world, outside Rome. They were used for burials but also as a place of refuge and worship during times of persecution, before being gradually abandoned as Christianity became established and burial customs changed. Their survival to this day, almost untouched by time, makes them a unique testament to how a small community in the south-western Aegean lived, believed and honoured its dead.
