In 1874 the residents of Manolas built this church dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helen, the “equal to the apostles” first Christian emperors whom tradition honors as protectors of any place seeking unity. The choice was no accident: at a time when Thirasia lived cut off, dependent on the sea and its harvests, the church served as a gathering point, the heart of a small world that had to stay united.

Today, more than a century and a half later, the church still stands where it was built — unchanged in essence, despite the earthquakes and weather trials the island has endured.

The architecture of restraint

The few permanent residents of Thirasia — a few dozen in winter — gather here, keeping alive a tradition that in other parts of the Cyclades has turned into a spectacle for visitors. Here it remains what it always was: a moment of community, faith, and memory.
