The city built by the sea

In the mid-19th century, Ermoupoli was the largest port in Greece. The refugees who arrived here after the Revolution built an urban capital from nothing, with trade, shipyards and textile mills. You can still see this wealth all around you: in the neoclassical mansions, in the marble, in the very layout of a city designed to impress.

Vaporia, mansions upon the wave

If the square is the drawing room, the Vaporia quarter is the city’s showcase. Here shipowners and merchants built their mansions quite literally over the waves, with coloured façades, neoclassical skylights and balconies hanging above the Aegean.

Walk down the steps and you discover the neighbourhood’s secret: beneath the mansions, small marble platforms become beaches within the city. Beside them rises the dome of Agios Nikolaos, watching over the quarter of the wealthy. Few places in Greece let you swim beneath a neoclassical balcony.

The details that stay with you

Ermoupoli rewards those who look closely. Notice the marble thresholds, polished by two centuries of footsteps. The wrought-iron railings with their plant motifs. The archways, the skylights, the door knockers.

Every detail is the signature of a craftsman you will never know, yet whose work still accompanies you. The city does not shout — it whispers, and you hear that whisper only when you walk slowly.

Ano Syros, the medieval hill

Above urban Ermoupoli, a second hill stands quieter and older: Ano Syros, the medieval Catholic settlement, built in amphitheatric fashion around the cathedral of Saint George. Here the lanes narrow, the archways cover the street and the steps climb without pause.

In these little streets Markos Vamvakaris, the patriarch of rebetiko, was born. As you climb, you can almost imagine the sound of the bouzouki drifting from some open window — because Ano Syros is not merely a place, it is a rhythm.
