Monastery of the Taxiarchis

You climb the narrow, paved road that winds between bare hills and dry-stone walls, and suddenly, where you least expect it, it appears like an apparition: a cluster of white masses with battlements, more fortress than church. This is the Monastery of the Taxiarchis, the spiritual center of Serifos, built in the northern part of the island, near the settlement of Panagia. The first impression does not deceive you: this place was built to endure.

A fortress of faith

The monastery was founded in the 15th century, around 1447, at a time when Serifos, like all the Cyclades, lived under the shadow of piracy and the conquerors who succeeded one another across the Aegean. It is no coincidence, then, that its architecture recalls a stronghold more than a quiet place of prayer. Tall, impenetrable walls surround the katholikon, forming an inner courtyard-refuge, and it is said that in difficult years the monks kept weapons beside the icons.

Walking through the vaulted entrance, you feel the temperature drop abruptly. The stone holds the coolness, the sound of your footsteps echoes through the arcades, and for a few seconds time seems to have stopped somewhere in the Middle Ages.

The katholikon and the Byzantine icons

At the center of the courtyard stands the katholikon, dedicated to the Synaxis of the Archangels. Inside, light filters in obliquely through small openings, illuminating a carved wooden iconostasis worked with patience and detail, where floral motifs entwine around the figures of the saints. Rare Byzantine icons, many of them from later centuries but with a strong medieval character, cover the walls, while frescoes surviving in fragments attest to the artistic tradition that flourished here, far from the great urban centers.

You do not need to be a scholar of Byzantine art to feel the weight of history. It is enough to stand before an icon worn by time and think how many generations of Serifiotes have stood on the same spot, with the same awe.

The breathtaking view

Stepping back into the light, the reward is a panoramic view stretching to the horizon: bare mountains dropping steeply toward the sea, the deep blue of the Aegean shimmering, and on clear days the outlines of neighboring islands traced in the distance. The wind here blows almost constantly, carrying the scents of thyme and sea salt. It is a view that makes you understand why the people of Serifos chose this exact spot to build their spiritual beacon.

A living tradition

The monastery is not merely a monument; it remains a living point of reference for the people of Serifos. Every year, on November 8th, the feast of the Synaxis of the Archangels, the site fills with the faithful who climb up from all over the island for the panigyri, continuing a centuries-old custom. Beyond its religious significance, the monastery also functions as a guardian of local memory, housing heirlooms, manuscripts, and objects that recount the course of Serifos through the centuries, from Byzantine times to the island’s modern life.
