The town beneath the town

Naxos Town is built like a palimpsest. Beneath today’s shops and cafés lies the medieval fabric of the old market — vaulted passageways, arched buildings, walls that still remember the Venetians and the merchants of centuries past.

Many of these buildings, restored with care, now house collections that keep the island’s material life alive. Walking the narrow lanes of the Town, you find yourself quite literally moving between layers of history: the Venetian Kastro above, the small Byzantine chapels on the corners, and, just below, the world of the ordinary people who worked this land.

Objects that speak

In folklore, a tool is never just a tool. The loom recounts whole winter nights of weaving. The clay jug carries the memory of the walk to the spring. The embroidered apron holds the hands of a girl preparing her dowry.

No other island in the Cyclades has such a rich relationship with the land. Naxos is the largest and most fertile — the valleys of Tragaea, the vineyards, the potatoes, the PDO graviera cheese, the citron, the flocks grazing on the slopes of Mount Zas.

This abundance shaped an entire culture of labour. The objects on display — the wine press, the barrel, the tools of cheesemaking — are not decorative. They are the remnants of a self-sufficient society that knew how to produce, to store, to survive. You understand Naxos far better once you have seen the tools with which its land was worked.

The art of simple hands

Alongside the tools stands beauty. For the people of this place were never content with the merely useful — they made it beautiful too. Embroideries in coloured thread, carved wooden chests, weavings with geometric patterns, vessels with simple yet striking designs.

This folk art is the same aesthetic sensibility that, centuries earlier, gave birth to the archaic kouroi in the quarries of Naxos and raised the Portara above the harbour. The same inclination towards beauty, translated into the language of humble materials.
