There is a moment, just before the sun sets, when the light on Kimolos changes color every few minutes — from yellow to orange, from pink to deep purple. And if you find yourself at that hour among the white houses of the Chora, climbing the narrow steps toward the summit, you will understand why the islanders chose this exact spot to build their castle. The Castle of Kimolos looks nothing like the ruined fortresses you encounter elsewhere in the Aegean. Built in the 15th century, during the years of Venetian rule, at the highest point of the Chora — the island’s capital — it follows a remarkably clever defensive logic: the houses themselves, built one beside the other in a closed ring, form the outer wall. There is no separate fortification enclosure; there are people living, even today, within the very walls that once protected them from pirates.

Walking through the three gates that lead into the core of the settlement, you feel as though you are stepping into another time. Narrow cobbled lanes, courtyards with potted plants, doors painted in vivid blues and greens open one beside the other, in a dense, almost labyrinthine layout that was once vital to the island’s survival.

It is a living monument, not something preserved behind glass.

In recent years, the castle’s interior has also come to host small, traditional cafés and gathering spots where visitors sit in the evening beneath the stars, enjoying local treats and the sweet, easygoing atmosphere of an island that has never been in a hurry to change.
