The Castle of Ios is not simply a ruin; it is the backbone around which Chora itself was born. It was built in the 15th century by the Venetians, in the years when piracy plagued the Aegean, with the aim of protecting the residents from sudden raids. Around this fortified core, the houses gradually sprouted, creating the distinctive amphitheatrical settlement you see today embracing the hillside.
Today, sections of the walls survive, along with vaulted passages and stone arches that still speak of the architectural logic of the era — defense first, beauty after.
The climb to the castle is no simple route; it is a walk through the very soul of the island.
