The Castle of Chora

There is a moment, as you pass through the first archway of the Castle, when time seems to stop. Light glows faintly along the narrow passages, the white walls embrace your every step, and suddenly you realize you are not walking among houses — you are walking inside the wall itself. This is the secret of the Castle of Chora in Folegandros, one of the rarest examples of fortified architecture in the Aegean, where defense and dwelling became one.

When the house becomes the wall

Folegandros passed into Venetian hands in the 13th century, as part of the Duchy of the Archipelago founded by Marco Sanudo after the Fourth Crusade. As on other Cycladic islands, the need for protection against pirate raids led to the building of a fortified settlement atop the steep rock. Here, however, the solution was ingenious: instead of separate walls, the outer facades of the houses — windowless, solid, pressed against one another — formed the enclosure itself. The result is an impenetrable shell of dwellings, three parallel narrow courtyard-streets closed in between them, and a unique way of life that has endured for centuries.

On the edge of the cliff

The location was no accident. The Castle rises at the edge of a sheer rock face that plunges into the sea, offering natural protection on one side and panoramic surveillance on the other. Today this very position grants visitors one of the most striking views in the Cyclades: the eye travels from the red-tiled roofs of Chora to the mountains of the interior before losing itself in the boundless blue of the Aegean. The sunset from here is not merely a spectacle — it is an experience that stays etched in memory.

A walk through time

Step through one of the old gates and let your feet lead you. The three inner streets — the Square, the middle row, and the last row of houses toward the cliff — retain their medieval form almost unchanged. Pots of geraniums and basil adorn the doorways, wooden balconies jut out over the cobblestones, and at every turn a new image awaits: a tiny chapel, a courtyard with small tables, a window open to the sea. The sensation is of stepping into a living, inhabited medieval painting.
