Long before the first asphalt road was laid, the people of Donousa moved from settlement to settlement on foot or with their animals, following routes traced out generations earlier, shaped to fit the terrain and the needs of daily survival. These paths were not tourist trails; they were the island’s veins, the roads that connected home to field, church to harbour, one settlement to another.

Today, walking those same tracks, you feel as though you are treading through a living history, not through a constructed experience.

From village to village

The network links the island’s small settlements — Stavros, Mersini, Kalotaritissa, Charavgi — with routes that alternate between bare, rocky landscape and unexpected green valleys. At every turn, a whitewashed chapel, a dry-stone wall, a ruined wine press are reminders that life here has continued uninterrupted for centuries.

There is no need to hurry. You stop, ask a local for directions, exchange a few words. This human dimension matters just as much as the landscape itself.

Breathtaking views

At every climb, the Aegean opens up before you in shades that shift with the light of day — from silver in the morning to deep cobalt at midday. The neighbouring islands of the cluster stand out like shadows on the horizon, and the only sounds are a flock of sheep grazing somewhere in the distance and the cries of gulls.
