Tower of Agios Petros

Somewhere between the pebbles of the road and the wind that blows ceaselessly off the open sea, a stone cylinder rises from the earth as though it has always stood there. The Tower of Agios Petros needs no sign to catch your eye; its silhouette, perfectly geometric against the wild relief of northern Andros, speaks for itself.

A journey across centuries

Built during the Hellenistic period, the tower belongs to a network of fortifications that once guarded the coasts and passes of Andros. Its position is no accident: from here, sentries could visually command the bay of Gavrio, one of the island’s most important natural harbours.

For centuries, guards scanned the horizon for the sails of enemy ships or signals from neighbouring towers. Today, the only “invasion” it receives is that of travellers climbing respectfully to admire it.

Architecture that has withstood time

Its cylindrical form, built from large rectangular stones without binding mortar, is considered a masterclass in ancient construction. The precision with which each stone was placed explains why, two and a half thousand years later, the tower remains one of the best-preserved monuments of its kind in the entire Cyclades.

Paths, rocks and silence

Reaching the tower is an adventure in itself. A path threading through wild shrubs, dry-stone walls, and scattered rocks leads you gradually higher, the sea vanishing and reappearing behind every bend.

The surrounding landscape remains deliberately untouched — no fences, no fanfare — which only heightens the sense that you are discovering something on your own, even though thousands have walked the same path before you.

Breathtaking views

Reaching the top, the reward is immediate: the bay of Gavrio unfolds before you in shades of turquoise and deep blue, with boats looking like miniature toys. To the west, Tinos stands out clearly on windless days.

The sunset from here turns the stone to gold, leaving an image etched in memory long after your return.
