In the heart of Chora, Andros’s main town, where neoclassical mansions bear witness to an era of maritime prosperity and intellectual ambition, one building holds within it something rarer than stone and marble: memory. This is the Kaireios Library, the island’s only intellectual institution, where the knowledge of Andros is preserved, studied and brought back to life for every visitor who stops to knock on its door.

A vision that became an institution

Its story begins with a passion: that of the historian Dimitrios I. Polemis, the inspiration and creator of the Library, who believed that Andros needed a space dedicated exclusively to safeguarding its local memory. His vision acquired legal standing in 1987, when it was established by Presidential Decree as a non-profit legal entity under private law.

This is not simply a collection of books, but a deliberate act of love for a place —an effort to ensure that nothing telling the story of Andros through the centuries would be lost.

The neoclassical home of books

The Library is housed in a neoclassical building donated to the institution by the Kampanis family, one of the island’s historic families. Walking up the steps of Chora, the visitor comes face to face with a façade that recalls Andros’s glorious maritime past —an architectural grandeur perfectly suited to the character of the institution it houses.

Inside, light falls on shelves full of history, while the prevailing silence is not empty; it is filled with the voices of past generations.

A treasure in paper and memory

Within its walls, the Kaireios preserves rare editions, archival material and documents relating to the history, seafaring tradition, families and daily life of Andros through the centuries. It is a place where the researcher, the student, and even the simply curious traveller can feel how the knowledge of an island can be kept alive, organised and accessible.

Every volume here functions like a tile in a larger mosaic: the identity of Andros, built up through generations of sailors, scholars and travellers.

The island’s intellectual centre today

The Library is governed by a five-member Board, chaired by Leonidas G. Kampanis, and operates thanks to the support of friends of the institution and occasional sponsorships. Today it continues to serve as a point of reference for anyone who wants to understand Andros more deeply —beyond the beaches and the footpaths, at the very core of its intellectual identity.

A visit here is the reverse of a summer journey: instead of looking out to the sea, you look inward, into the history that built the island you admire today.
