Hike the Old Stone Paths

There is a sound that will follow you the whole way: the crunch of stone slabs beneath your feet, mingled with the song of cicadas and the distant ring of a church bell. On Sifnos, walking is not simply a means of getting around; it is a way of reading the island the way its inhabitants have read it for centuries, step by step, stone by stone.

A network of history beneath your feet

The cobbled paths of Sifnos — the well-known “kalderimia” — were not built for tourists. They were built by farmers, shepherds, and potters who needed to connect their villages with the fields, the beaches, and the monasteries. Today, this network of several hundred kilometres remains almost intact, winding past dry-stone walls, threshing floors, and small chapels numbering more than three hundred across the island.

Every turn of the path conceals a story: a forgotten dovecote, a stone fountain, a small farmhouse roofed with seaweed and earth. Walking here, you are not simply visiting Sifnos; you are walking through its memory.

From Apollonia to the Kastro

The most iconic route begins in Apollonia, the heart of the island, and leads to the medieval Kastro, the Byzantine capital of Sifnos. The path crosses through Artemonas with its neoclassical mansions, climbs among vineyards and olive trees, and ends at a fortified settlement built on a rock, with a breathtaking view over the Aegean.

The light here is constantly changing; silver in the morning, golden in the afternoon. The white house façades reflect the sun, while the narrow passages of the Kastro carry you back centuries, to a time when architecture itself served as defence.

Paths that lead to the sea

Other paths descend towards the sea, linking mountain settlements with secluded coves. The route from Exambela to Platy Yialos, or the one leading to Chrysopigi — the monastery built on a rock that is “cut off” from the mainland — is among the most beloved.

The scent of thyme and oregano accompanies you the whole way, while the view alternates between rocky slopes and steep cliffs above turquoise waters. When you reach the coast, a swim feels like a reward for every step taken.

Art, tradition, and the taste of the place

Sifnos is known as the island of ceramics, with a pottery tradition that stretches back into the depths of the centuries, thanks to the clay and schist that abound here. Walking through the villages, you will come across workshops where this craft continues from generation to generation, with traditional Sifnian vessels — casserole dishes, pots, embossed plates — adorning courtyards and shop windows.

Hiking here goes hand in hand with gastronomy. After a demanding route, nothing rewards you better than a plate of revithada, chickpeas slow-baked in a clay pot, or “mastelo” lamb cooked the traditional way in a wooden vessel. The island’s culinary identity is inextricably bound to the rural life that gave birth to these very paths.

Time moves at a different pace here

As you near the end of your route, legs tired and eyes full of images, you will understand why the people of Sifnos preserved these paths instead of abandoning them. They are not merely roads; they are the thread that ties past to present, land to sea, people to their place.
