Try Kayaking or Paddleboarding

A travel feature on how kayaking and paddleboarding reveal the hidden, untrodden side of Koufonisia.

Koufonisia

There’s a moment in Koufonisia when the water stops looking like water. It turns to glass, becomes a mirror, a turquoise surface so clear that your kayak seems to hover in mid-air. There, among rocks carved by centuries of meltemi wind, you understand why some places aren’t meant to be walked — they’re meant to be paddled.

The setting: a coastline built for exploration

Koufonisia, in the heart of the Small Cyclades, isn’t one island but two — the inhabited Ano Koufonisi and the almost untouched Kato Koufonisi, separated by a narrow sea channel. Between and around them stretches a landscape of coves, islets and caves that the mainland can barely reach.

The water here is rarely deep near the shore, which makes it an ideal setting for those who want to move at their own pace, unhurried, without an engine — just the paddle, the board, and the breath of the wind.

Kayaking: the route to hidden coves

A sea kayak lets you follow the coastline where no path leads. Beaches accessible only from the sea, small coves hidden behind rocks, caves shaped by the sea over centuries — all of it opens up before you, paddle stroke by paddle stroke.

Toward Kato Koufonisi, the landscape grows wilder and more solitary; only a small chapel stands there as a mark of human presence. On the horizon you can make out the silhouette of Keros, the remote rock that has guarded secrets of Cycladic civilization for thousands of years — a reminder that these waters travel through time as well as space.

Paddleboarding: walking on the sea

If kayaking is exploration, SUP is meditation. Standing on the board, your feet balancing on water that looks like a thin glass membrane, you gain a view no swimmer has: you see the seabed, the fish, the shadows of the rocks passing beneath you as if in a slow, underwater film.

The shallow, sheltered waters around the island’s beaches are almost ideal for beginners — all it takes is a little balance and the will to let go. More experienced paddlers venture further, to small shores where the sand remains untouched for most of the day.

In Koufonisia you don’t watch the sea from the beach; you step into it and let it lead you.Visitor impression

Pace, respect, and attention to the elements

The meltemi in the Cyclades isn’t a theoretical risk but a daily reality, especially on summer afternoons. The best time for kayaking or SUP is usually the morning, when the sea is calmer and the light falls softer on the water.

The area around Keros is archaeologically protected, so approaching or anchoring there is subject to restrictions — it’s worth checking before planning a route in that direction. In any case, the waters of Koufonisia reward respect: the more gently you move through them, the more they reveal.

An experience that stays with you

When you leave the paddle behind and step back onto dry sand, something has shifted in the way you see the island. It’s no longer just its photographed beaches — it’s also those hidden coves, the caves, the silence between two strokes, that no map marks. In Koufonisia, the most authentic route is the one you chart yourself, on the water.

Useful information

  • Kayak and SUP equipment is available for rent at spots near the beaches of Ano Koufonisi — ask locally about current options.
  • Prefer the morning hours, before the meltemi picks up, for calm waters and better visibility.
  • Always wear a life jacket or buoyancy vest, even if you’re an experienced swimmer.
  • The marine area around Keros has archaeological access restrictions — check before planning a route there.
  • Don’t forget water-resistant sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water — the Cycladic sun is strong even out on the sea.
  • Avoid solo outings into unfamiliar areas; always let someone know your route.
