A history written not only by sailors and merchants, but also by workers, engineers, craftsmen and entrepreneurs who helped transform Ermoupoli into one of the most important industrial centres of modern Greece.
The Industrial Museum of Ermoupoli offers one of the most fascinating journeys into the Aegean’s past. This is no ordinary museum visit. It is an experience that brings you close to the people who breathed life into the factories, shipyards and workshops of a city that once buzzed with production and innovation.
During the 19th century, Ermoupoli grew into one of the most important economic and industrial centres in the country. Its strategic position, its port and the entrepreneurial drive of its residents created a city that led the way in shipping, manufacturing and trade.
Today, the industrial buildings that survive in the city stand as living testimonies to that period. Old factories, chimneys and workshops make up a unique urban landscape rarely found elsewhere in Greece.

At the heart of the museum lies an impressive collection of more than 300 machines and tools, unique by Greek standards.
Here you’ll discover equipment from tanneries, machine shops, textile mills, print shops, shipyards, loukoumi (Turkish delight) makers and food-processing workshops. Many of the pieces come from businesses in Ermoupoli and were saved thanks to a systematic effort of collection and preservation that began as early as the 1980s.
Every machine hides its own story. A story of people who worked tirelessly, created products, exported them abroad, and contributed to the development of an island that was once at the forefront of technological progress.
One of the museum’s most unexpected and fascinating chapters concerns Enfield Automotive, a story that seems to come from the future.
In the early 1970s, the British company Enfield took up the production of electric cars at a time when electric mobility seemed almost like science fiction. The company’s owner, shipowner Giannis Goulandris, decided to move production to Syros, creating one of the most groundbreaking factories of the era.
