Hozoviotissa Monastery

There are images that stay etched in your memory long before you reach your destination. On Amorgos, one of them is Hozoviotissa Monastery. Like a thin white brushstroke on the wild grey rock, the historic monastery seems to hover between the sky and the Aegean, 300 metres above the sea.

It is no coincidence that it is the island’s most recognisable symbol and one of the most striking monastic complexes in the Mediterranean. Its first sight is awe-inspiring; the closer you get, the more impressive the image becomes.

A monastery that defies logic

Built in 1088 by Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, Hozoviotissa Monastery seems to spring from the very heart of the mountain. Eight levels rise vertically against the sheer cliff, in places no more than five metres wide.

Its architecture inspires wonder even today. You find yourself asking how such a feat could have been built in so inaccessible a spot almost a thousand years ago. And yet, centuries later, the monastery still stands proud against the winds and the sea.

Inside, it guards the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary which, according to local tradition, arrived mysteriously from the shores of Asia Minor to be saved from the iconoclasm. The legend remains alive and is an inseparable part of the identity of the place.

The climb that becomes a pilgrimage

The experience begins long before you cross the monastery’s threshold. To reach it, you will climb almost 300 stone steps that follow the flank of the mountain.

Every pause along the ascent offers a new view of the endless blue. The Aegean stretches out before you without end, while the sheer coasts of Amorgos reveal their wildest, most authentic side.

When you finally reach the top, the feeling is unique. The stillness, the light reflected on the white walls and the view over the open sea create an atmosphere of serenity that words can hardly describe.

The hospitality of the monks

One of the things that make the visit unforgettable is the traditional hospitality of the monks. By custom, visitors are welcomed with loukoumi, cool water and a small glass of the famous “psimeni”, the aromatic local liqueur of Amorgos.
