THE COMPANY

 AMORGOS TRADITIONAL SPIRITS

Since ancient times the residents of the island of Amorgos and the Small Cyclades produced a hot drink/beverage called vrastari which is basically adding raki, sugar, cinnamon and cloves in boiling water. They drank this when they had a sore throat. Whatever was left over they kept in a bottle and used it to treat their guests. This drink is also the official drink used to treat the visitors at the Monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa in Amorgos.

This drink is the source of our inspiration to set up our distillery Amorgos in 2003. After adding honey to the recipe and another 8 herbs that thrive in Amorgos we prepared the drinks Amorgion Rakomelo 25% vol and Amorgion Psimeni (Baked) 20% vol. Their formula is unique! A Grape distillate (called raki) mixed with honey and herbs. In 2007 based on the successful formula of Amorgion we created 4 more new drinks. The Mastichato (Rakomelo with Masticha), the Lemontelo (honey with lemon), the Portomelo (honey with orange) and the Melikraton (honey with wine).

All our drinks have patents from The Hellenic Industrial Property Organisation (OBI) and patented names (labels) at the Ministry of Development. All our drinks are prepared with traditional local ingredients without any preservative. Our drinks can be consumed either as an aperitif (appetizer) or as a digestif (digestive), accompanied with assorted nuts and fruits. Enjoy!

DETAILS:  From early times the inhabitants of the island Amorgos and the Small Islands of Cyclades were producing a broth with raki, sugar, cinnamon and cloves which they drank when they had a sore throat. Whatever remained of this they would keep in a bottle and use it to treat their guests. This drink is also the official treat of the Monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa in Amorgos. This drink was our inspiration, and after adding honey to the recipe and 8 herbs that thrive in Amorgos, we manufactured the drink Rakomelo Amorgion.

DETAILS:  The difference between rakomelo and baked: both are rakomelo! That is what the drink is called, made with raki and sugar, that they use to treat in Amorgos island at the Monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa. Our baked rakomelo, has sugar and honey and is almost the same drink as Amorgion rakomelo but a little lighter (vol 20%) and more sweet tasting which younger generations tend to prefer as they like their soft drinks.

DETAILS:  Our drink is produced by the prickly pears, which are wild fruits of the cactus prickly pear, that grows in the island of Amorgos. Like the tequila drink, which is produced by the cactus, the prickly pear has its origins in Mexico City and came in Europe from Spanish sailors the year 1.500 and spread rapidly in the countries of Mediterranean. The lovers of Tequila will find in our drink the special taste that will excite them!

DETAILS:  The drink inspired by the ancient Greeks. In ancient books we read that when the ancient Greeks, worn out from work or war, would return home, their wives would offer them a drink with wine, honey and herbs, which they thought was very energizing in order to help them cope with their obligations. Using this information as our inspiration we brewed oinomelo melikraton, with wine from grapes with sun dried muscat, liquor and herbs renowned for their digestive abilities, toning and other… qualities!
