THE COMPANY

Villa Ioulia was built in 1880 by Mikhail Zannos, a seaman from Oddessa, as dowry to his daughter Evangelia who married Mihalis Mavromatis. The house in its original form was an imposing neo-classical building, consisting of 13 rooms all internally decorated with frescos and furniture from St.Petersburg. As tradition calls, the house passed from Evangelia and Mihalis to their first daughter Ioulia who married Mihalis Laggadas, a doctor and a loving father of four children. Mihalis passed away early, and his widow Ioulia raised and educated all four of her children by producing and trading wine at the Canava level of her estate. She was a lovable woman that many of the elders of the island still remember.

On July 9, 1956, the house suffered serious damage from a 7.8 Richter scale earthquake that struck the island, It’s North corner collapsed, while the Canava level and the rest of the estate remained intact. Through the government's earthquake compensation program the house was replaced by a much smaller and architecturally different structure which passed to Evangelia Laggada who married Petros Nomikos son of Dimitris Nomikos (the first tomato paste producer in the southeast European region). The house passed to their daughter Maria who renovated it in 2015, restoring it to its initial volume and refurbishing all the antiques and collections that have been salvaged from the original house.
