THE COMPANY

The history of the privately owned vineyard of the MORAITICO winery of Georgios Moraitis, has roots over 80 years, planted in pieces selected based on fertile soils and good orientation due to the difficult conditions of the time and the scarce water in the soil of the island, by his grandfather Emmanuel Moraitis who came to Paros from the Peloponnese during the revolution of 1821. Then his father Theodoros Moraitis continues the viticultural tradition with great success. Georgios Moraitis remembers as a celebration, the harvesters who worked in the vineyard pressing the grapes in the wine press of the estate and then emptying the must into touloumi made of goatskin in order to safely transport it in endless queues with donkeys and mules to the family winery. Its processing followed and the wine was loaded in large barrels into the family boat "Sevasti", which dominates the company's logo, to travel throughout Greece and France.

In 1970 his father Theodoros Moraitis chose the youngest of his four children, Georgios Moraitis as the sole successor and continuator of the family's wine tradition.

By decision of his father, Georgios Moraitis studied oenologistin Athens. During his studies, along with his theoretical training, he had the opportunity to do his internship in one of the largest wine-producing companies in Greece with international recognition in "BOTRYS" of Bodossaki for 4 years. There he gained vast experience next to remarkable Greek and French oenologists.

After completing his studies, he returns to Paros and his father Theodoros assigns him the vinification and standardization of wine. In 1976 he made his first successful bottling with the wine "KAVARNIS", putting his stone in the family tradition. Since then, the Parian bottled wine is welcomed with joy throughout Paros. And then you become known outside Paros. At the end of the decade his brother Manolis comes to the winery from the ships. They could not work together harmoniously – the fate of the wine-producing families – and Georgios Moraitis sadly leaves his father's winery, which costs him. His belief from a very early age in organic farming and vinification of organic wines leads him to the "end of the thread". Thus, in the 90s, George planted his own vineyards in his hereditary estates, one in a difficult ground of slate and granite with northeast orientation, but overlooking the sea, in the bay of Naoussa of Paros, where he built the site of the MORAITICO winery. He made his first vinification in 2003 at the Union of Cooperatives of Paros with two thousand bottles of wine. Then he vinifies in his own space in his vineyard and in October 2006 in a nationwide organic wine competition ECOFESTIVAL Athens and obtains the first gold award with the "white wine of the island". Participations in competitions and many publications followed, with the top one being Eleftherotypia, which declares him the champion of organic wines, because this fact is a unique recognition not only for him but also for Paros. This was followed by the top recognition of obtaining in 2019 the gold award with the "red of the island" and "the pomegranate of the island" and the silver award with the "white of the island" at the international organic wine competition "AMPHORE" held in Paris.

George Moraitis enjoys with great pleasure the reward of his winemaking tradition, continues it in a way that does not erase the productive trend of today with "the wine of the island" in white, rosé and red and envisions a future with prudent and responsible treatment of feeding on planet earth.
