THE COMPANY
Mikra Thira is the first and thus far only winery built on the small island of Therassia located across from Santorini. The name Mikra Thira derives from an ancient reference in literature to Therassia as “small Santorini”. In fact, Therassia was once a part of Santorini until the great volcanic eruption of 17th century BC isolated this piece of land that possesses a matchless raw and natural beauty.
The idea to establish a winery here was born in 2007, but only took shape 10 years later when the founders of Mikra Thira, renowned Greek winemakers Vangelis Gerovassiliou, Vassilis Tsaktsalis and Ioanna Vamvakouri, decided to realise their common dream.
Going against the current, the three of them saw the ecosystem of secluded and almost deserted Therassia as a challenge when endeavouring to craft quality wines expressive of the island’s distinct microclimate.
The winery, situated in the north-west of Therassia near the village of Potamos, is surrounded by vineyards and adjoins the sea. It faces Folegandros, Sikinos and Ios, the islands on which the famous sundown of Santorini sets.
The winery building is assimilated by the natural environment and designed in a traditional Cycladic architectural style based on local materials and traditional geometry.
It includes modern winemaking and wine ageing facilities as well as bespoke wine tasting rooms. It is open to those visitors who want to discover the magic of Therassia through the wines of Mikra Thira.
