THE COMPANY
The Monastery of the Archangels, near the village of Galani, is of great architectural interest. Built in 1572, as a men's monastery and in 1617 a mutual learning school was founded in the premises, possessing many Venetian estates and great wealth. The stronghold character of the building, has only one entrance at a height of 4 meters, turrets and a mobile ladder. The construction is due to the fact that the wealth of the monastery had acquired great reputation, attracting pirates, whom the monks had to fight.
The monastery is dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, who are the protectors of the island, their image was transferred from Cyprus, considered to be miraculous. The church architecture is triconch, with a dome. The frescoes, some parts of them survive today, attributed to Emannouil Skordili visualize the Archangel fighting the beast of Revelation, the Dragon, that swallows kings and bishops. The images of the temple are a characteristic example of Cretan hagiographic school.
Of particular interest, inside the church, is a repousse double-headed eagle on the marble floor (1659), while in the treasures of the monastery are remarkable ritual utensils, manuscripts and the Holy Code (of 1754). In 1909 a library was founded in the monastery.
