Ios island (CHORA IOU)
GAΪTIS - SIMOSSI MUSEUM
Ascending to Chora, shortly after the windmills near the amphitheater «Odysseas Elytis,» you’ll find the The Gaïtis - Simossi Museum, a modern art museum dedicated to the work of painter Yannis Gaïtis and sculptress Gabriella Simossi. Yannis Gaϊtis, a painter of worldwide recognition, became known to the public for his characteristic anonymous little men “anthropakia”, while Gabriella Simossi has been distinguished for her remarkable work in sculpture. Following the long lasting connection of the two artists to the island of Ios, the Gaïtis - Simossi Museum was created through the partnership of the Municipality of Ios and Loretta Gaïtis, their daughter and sole heir.
The Museum is housed in a 1,600 square meter building complex, meticulously designed by architects Loretta Gaïtis and Jacques Charrat. It is built at the top of a hill, offering the ultimate panoramic view of the Chora and the port of Ios, as well as the islands of Sikinos, Paros, and Naxos, set against the boundless blue expanse of the Aegean Sea.
