THE COMPANY

Summer visitors see the Cyclades as rainfed islands. Minimalistic beauty, dazzling white and blazing sun. However, the truth is before our eyes. Cyclades rank among the richest places in biodiversity globally. The unique conditions of the Islands, meaning the glowing sun, the Aegean Sea breeze and strong winds, create an impressive wealth of herbs, containing outstandingly high levels of essential oils. Hence, the unexpected strong aromas, flavours and colours of the Cycladic herbs.

Herbs brand the lifestyle in Syros, the capital of the Cyclades island complex. They keep a leading role in the local cuisine, ceremonies and social events, remedies, decoration, and so many more. Working our land, enjoying our herbs, while appreciating their important part in our everyday life, we realized how lucky we were to live in such as blessed place. Thus, the idea of growing, collecting, drying and packaging our own herbs was born. In autumn 2012, we, a group of friends, founded the Cyclades Organics.

Moreover, we adapt plants from other places in Greece to our special climate. As a result, the biodiversity of our ecosystem alters the balance making the aromas stronger, the flavours more intense.

Loving and respecting nature, we marry tradition with modern expertise to cultivate our oregano, thyme, sage, rosemary, marjoram and aloe vera. We use traditional and natural ways as possible to grow, harvest, process and package our herbs. The authenticity and quality of our products as organic, as well as our procedure and practices meet the standards of the EU regulation.

But, we do not rest. We always experiment, in search for more.

ORGANICS

Cycladic sage
Salvia Triloba, commonly known as Greek sage, is a perennial herb or sub-shrub. Located in all regions of Greece, especially in dry and rocky mountainous places, Greek sage has a strong aromatic odor and a long history of culinary use. While it is used for flavoring various dishes and vinegars, it is also considered as one of the most delicious herbal infusion.
Greek sage is very common in the Cyclades landscape. In spring, the mountains in Cyclades are covered by the purplish flowers of the herb. The women in Cyclades used to hang bouquets of sage in their patios. Today, hanging bunches of sage are common sight in traditional food products stores, while it appears regularly in gourmet dishes.

Cycladic Oregano
Native to Greece, Origanum onites is an oregano species growing in the Cyclades and the Aegean islands in general. Oregano is indigenous to sunny, hilly, medium in terms of soil fertility, rainfed areas. The tradition of using oregano is lost in the mists of time. In the Cyclades, oregano holds a leading role as food flavouring. The women collect the herb and dry them in a shady place. Then, they used to get together in one of their courtyards for the “ritual” το separate leaves from steams, go through them for bits of chaff before placing them in sealed jars and store them.
Oregano flavours roasts, marinates meats and fishes, spices up salads with its characteristic aroma and exceptional taste.
Cycladic thyme
Thymus capitatus is one the most common and popular herb in the Cyclades and the islands of the Aegean in general. Given its culinary and medicinal uses, as well as being a favorite of honey bees is also considered as an important one. This particular species of thyme blooms in summer, covering the mountains with its unique mauve-purple flowers. Low transpiration rate and its shape make it a highly drought resistant plant. The exquisite flavour of thymus capitatus comes from the leaves. Quality Thymus capitatus' flowers are very popular for their strong and distinctive aroma and are used in cooking and in drinks. Separating the leaves from the stems is a demanding hand work, but not as much as the process of harvesting and separating the flower, while keeping it intact.
