vulcanica, la mitica <strong>Strongyle<\/strong> (o Kalliste), insieme all'attuale Santorini. Intorno al 1600 a.C. la cosmogonica <strong>eruzione minoica<\/strong> fece esplodere il centro del vulcano, fece sprofondare l'interno dell'isola e form\u00f2 l'enorme <strong>caldera<\/strong>; cos\u00ec Therasia si stacc\u00f2 e rimase sul lato occidentale del cratere.<\/p><p>Therasia occupa un posto particolare nell'archeologia dell'Egeo. Gi\u00e0 nel <strong>1866\u20131867<\/strong>, quando l'isola veniva cavata per l'estrazione della celebre \u00abterra di Thera\u00bb vulcanica usata nel canale di Suez, vennero alla luce edifici e reperti preistorici \u2014 una scoperta che <strong>precedette<\/strong> nel tempo il grande scavo di Akrotiri a Santorini e attir\u00f2 per la prima volta l'interesse scientifico sulla civilt\u00e0 preistorica della regione.<\/p><p>Nell'antichit\u00e0 l'isola si trovava nell'ombra della potente <strong>Antica Thera<\/strong>. Dopo il periodo romano e bizantino, con la Francocrazia Therasia pass\u00f2, insieme a Santorini, sotto il dominio veneziano ed entr\u00f2 nella sfera del <strong>Ducato dell'Egeo<\/strong>, subendo al contempo le incursioni dei pirati che costringevano gli abitanti a costruire lontano dal mare.<\/p><p>Sotto l'<strong>Impero Ottomano<\/strong> e in seguito, all'interno del pi\u00f9 recente stato greco, Therasia rimase un'isola agricola povera ma fiera, con un'economia basata sulla <strong>vite<\/strong>, il vino e i prodotti vulcanici. Mentre la vicina Santorini si trasformava in una destinazione turistica mondiale, Therasia si spopolava gradualmente \u2014 e proprio per questo ha mantenuto intatto l'aspetto autentico della
